Bird hunting has only been picking up in very recent years. South African hunters are spoilt with abundance of antelope, causing them to shun birds as varmint. (Egyptian Geese and pigeons are in fact considered a pest on dry land crops.) Most ranchers will charge little or nothing if their antelope clients want to take some quarry on the wing.
There are however ranches that specialize in wing shooting, focusing mainly on “up-market” local hunters and visiting hunters. (Almost like the fly-fishing image!). Some believe that SA has huge potential for game bird safaris.
